About
Michael Scott, Jr. serves as Principal of Uncommon Canarsie Middle School in Brooklyn, New York, where he has led the school since 2018. A native of Gary, Indiana, Michael is passionate about ensuring that all students—regardless of background—have access to an excellent education and opportunities to reach their fullest potential.
Michael earned his bachelor’s degree from Indiana State University and his master’s degree in School Leadership from Harvard University. He began his career in education as a Teach For America corps member, an experience that solidified his commitment to educational equity and student achievement.
Under Michael’s leadership, Uncommon Canarsie Middle School has consistently delivered strong academic outcomes while serving a predominantly economically disadvantaged student population. In 2025, the school’s students outperformed New York State’s non-economically disadvantaged students in both English Language Arts and Mathematics, demonstrating what is possible when high expectations are paired with exceptional teaching and unwavering support for children. He was recognized as Principal of the Year in 2025 and was also named a finalist for the Teach For America The Collective National Advisory Board Honor.
Outside of school, Michael enjoys history, aviation, travel, and baking. He believes that leadership is ultimately about creating the conditions for others to succeed and is honored to join the Teaching Lab Fellowship alongside educators committed to transforming outcomes for students.
